Chinese companies own or have large partnership stakes in 6 of 16 active lithium mining projects in Argentina, including 4 of the 6 most developed projects. Investment in these mines helps to further cement China's dominance and control over the lithium industry, a mineral critical for the green-energy transition, particularly in the construction of lithium-ion batteries.

Seventy-five percent of the world's lithium is contained in the desert salt flats (salars) at the crossroads of Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile, known as the lithium triangle.
